Playing along with Meet Me at Mikes, not stealing broth.
Sure it’s January 14 and I’m technically still on holidays, but I didn’t feel I could go forward until I spent a minute looking back. So here I am, summing up the year that was in Taking Stock-style. A nutshell, if you will.
Made : Not much actually, just the usual dishcloths and a certain pair of bootees for a certain royal bébé, nbd
Cooked : The most popular recipe on the blog for 2018 was actually these veg meatballs (but I prefer the Swedish ones… something about the cream gravy I think!).
Drank : I finally found Bushell’s Billy Tea blend in loose-leaf so I stocked up on that, but it’s honestly just been the regular Lan-Choo. Nothing better, really.
Read: I read 41 books last year, according to Goodreads, which was more than the 25 target I had set myself. All of teh books, please and thank you! I set this year’s target at 30 but surely I can outdo that too. I think my favourite books of 2018 were M Train by Patti Smith, and for a book released in 2018 it would have to be Too Much Lip by Melissa Lucaschenko.
Trawled: I found myself reading a lot of New Yorker stories.
Wanted: Little things. Big things. Kind of not much at all, really – by the end of the year I was pretty content and grateful for where we were and what we had right now even though it was not quite what I wanted at the start of it.
Looked: At the girls growing so much. Smalls in her first year of school even! How did we get here. Biggie is a real proper kid.
Decided : To let things be what they will.
Wished: Mostly that the kids would be settled in school and I didn’t even have to wish it long because last year was a breeze for them. Smalls owned that shit daily.
Enjoyed : Lots of outdoorsy good fun times
Waited : I guess for the next big thing in my life? I felt like I was ready, but nothing happened and I suppose it wasn’t meant to?
Liked : So much. 2018 was a real positive, I think.
Wondered: WHAT WAS HAPPENING (but nothing was, see above haha)
Loved : Everything and everyone. It makes the world go round, no? And life’s too short for dumb grudges (and bad bread)
Pondered : What is the meaning of my life? Like, what am I here to do? What if it’s not what I think?
Listened : Records, records everywhere. And of course The Throne Rangers, duh. The more I can discuss the finer points of Harry’s beard, the better.
Considered : further study (what’s new)
Bought : Not much
Watched : Ummmm I’m terrible at watching things but let’s just assume it was cooking-related. Hoped : Well school was a big thing, so I felt like most of my worries and hopes were pinned on that, and when it went off without a hitch there wasn’t much more to be concerned about.
Marvelled : That I managed to meet Hazza on a trip where few people did. A real stroke of luck!
Cringed : Thinking of my cousin 42 weeks pregnant in a Queensland summer and remembering how much I didn’t cope with that situation very well when it was me.
Needed : Answers, so of course I got none 🤣
Questioned : How my 6yo can still not eat any actual food and be alive?
Smelled : Cooking, always
Wore : I did that thing where you remove everything bar like, five outfits from your closet over winter and it was great. Nobody saw it anyway because I was always at home and I wore big coats at school dropoff. Not having to think was bliss.
Followed : Anyone with a farm.
Noticed : Every little bit of the changing of the seasons.
Knew : When I live according to the seasons I feel a whole lot better.
Thought : About big-picture, long-term stuff a lot. And food.
Admired : Anyone who never gave up. It always seems like people try stuff out for years and when they’re just about to give up, they hit paydirt.
Got : This is not a word
Bookmarked : About a thousand recipes.
Disliked : Trump, injustice, and racist idiots
Opened : My expectations.
Giggled : British comedy still my #1 boyfriend
Felt : Content.
Heard : Voices.
Celebrated : Every Friday!
Pretended : Not to notice my ancient, dust-trap windowsills.
Embraced : The unknown. And old house dirt.
Gasped : This prompt always confuses me
How was 2018 for you? It was a welcome positive break after a run of pretty blah years for me, so I hope I’m on the upward trend. Swings and roundabouts, eh?
