A little trip to Bendigo Woollen Mills (and THAT vanilla slice!)

June 17, 2015 by Stacey 17 Comments

Bendigo-12

I love Bendigo – I go there every chance I get, and I make up any reason to go.

That reason is usually that my yarn stash desperately needs something from the Woollen Mills, but we all know that’s a lie. I DO need it though. Honest.

Have you been? I used to go there a lot when I was a kid. Let’s take a little stroll:

And is autumn not the best time to go? I mean for real, get a load of that foliage. That light! The fact we didn’t have to wear jumpers!

Lake! wildlife!

They also have an amazing park near the lake and a very helpful drive-through coffee place across the road.

And this:Bendigo-8Basically the best vanilla slice you’ll ever eat in your life. Go here. Thank me later.

Where has been the best vanilla slice you ever had?

I have never been to Bendigo, although I know my boys would love it…My mother would crawl over broken glass to get to a good Vanilla Slice! Her recent ‘best’ finds on that front have come courtesy of The Bakery in Proserpine North Queensland and a tiny cafe on the outskirts of Christchurch, New Zealand. I have tried over the years to recreate them at home, never the same…yum you have me craving one…x

Oh yeah, I suck at making them! I suck at eating them too, I squeeze all the good stuff out the back. Terrible. I hear there’s a good one a couple of hours from me and I’m going to investigate ASAP!

God love me a good vanilla slice! I think my favourite is still from my old home town of Forster but I’m not sure if that’s because its really that good or because I like the memories that go with it….

Oh I’m the same! I have been making things for the kids that I really fondly remember and they’re HORRIBLE! Like that time I made warm custard from custard powder. Holy shit it was so gross. I think I’ll just stick to the memories, haha

So many memories looking at those photos, I grew up in Bendigo before moving to Brisbane when I was 20. I certainly didn’t appreciate it growing up as much as I do now, we regularly take the boys back there to visit family and it’s such a beautiful and family friendly place. I also love that my Mum doesn’t live too far from the woollen mills and lake!

Oh I do that with the other towns I lived in! I guess you can’t see what you’ve got when you’re a kid. But I can’t stop going back 🙂

oooooo bendigo woollen mills…… i have been on their website so many times, but the crate of yarn in my room stares at me and makes me close the tab. Sigh. Why must yarn be so squishy and addictive!

Give me chocolate any day over a vanilla slice but I do know where ‘the world’s best’ vanilla slice is sold – Just Fine Foods in Sorrento – my mother-in-law always goes home with 3 when she comes to visit us on the Mornington Peninsula, gives them out to her friend’s back in Melbourne. She knows a thing or two about cakes 🙂

Give me cheese any day over either, if we’re honest!

I’m not a crafter, but I have wonderful memories of getting out in the country for people’s 21st when I lived on ressies at the University of Canberra. I never made it out to Bendigo though. I think it might be an awesome place to take the boys for a weekend away – your photos look lovely and I am a big fan of a good vanilla slice.

Only because you linked on FB today, have you ever been to Golden Nugget Bakery in Ballarat?? They won the best vanilla slice in Australia in 2015. It’s really really really good. While you’re there, check out King’s Bakery as well as they have a good one too. Now I need to go check out the one in Bendigo for comparison.

PERFECT timing, my Dad has just moved to Ballarat! Will definitely have to hunt down the best vanilla slice in Australia! If you have any other suggestions, I’m all ears!
