Constant Craving

May 11, 2017 by Stacey 9 Comments

pregnancy cravings | Veggie Mama

I can’t even begin to tell you how disappointed I was when I didn’t get weird cravings with either pregnancy. I’m sure I’ve mentioned it before, but man… I wanted a funny story to tell and I got nothing. Nothing. The closest I ever came was being desirous of lemony or gingery things so I would eat a lot of salads and drink a lot of juice, but it was never a craving.

(ps I just looked back over my pregnancy updates… how rage-filled can one tired pregnant woman be?! haha)

I did develop the mother of all sweet teeth however (I literally just typed “sweet tooths” I think I need more sleep), and would go hunting after every meal for something sweet to finish it off. I was suddenly neck-deep in family-size chocolate bars, cakes, cookies and custard the likes which have not been seen since Stacey circa 1992. But no pickles and ice cream, no peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches, no endless supply of rockmelon to salve the starving beast within.

Nothing.

It’s dreadful! But I do enjoy living vicariously through others so I asked around and did some digging. These are the weirdest but coolest (non-pica) pregnancy cravings I found. And may have gagged at.

  • a lemon after dinner every night
  • chicken nuggets covered in custard
  • chewing on dry teabags
  • canned corn cold out of the tin
  • pizza dipped in icing
  • meatballs and milk
  • mustard sandwiches
  • spicy beef jerky and strawberry ice cream
  • chicken-flavoured 2 minute noodles on sandwiches
  • fish skin

Fish skin! I mean really. That’s amazing.

So what did you eat? What did your mum eat when she was pregnant with you? Tell me everything!

    Fish skin? So much ewwww.

I think the canned corn makes me the sickest though. I don’t know why but eating anything directly from a can just seems like one step away from complete savagery. But I will bury my entire head in a bag of salt and vinegar. Whatever.

I went off everything sweet……..I had no desire for chocolate or cake which I normally love and I could not stand coffee which normally I love (thankfully I am again friend with coffee). I was really thirsty and remember drinking a lot of juice and ate my way through many cold juicy pineapples and really liked cold yoghurt but had no cravings per say

Nothing for me either. It was so disappointing. I mean I wanted dumplings for every meal, but who doesn’t love dumplings at any time?? The worst thing was that there was a cafe near me that made cupcakes exactly like a cafe near me when I lived in New York, and the cakes were like a homecoming for me every time I ate them. During my second pregnancy I couldn’t stomach them so after I gave birth I rushed over, desperate for that nostalgia… only to discover the cafe had changed hands and they were making the same-looking cake with a completely different recipe. I was heartbroken. No more tastebud time travel.

People shouldn’t be able to do that. I still mourn a scrambled egg situation from a cafe that changed hands about 5 times. The egg is not the egg of 2007 and I’m still not over the loss.

Hahaha there’s some great cravings on that list. When my Mum was pregnant with me she craved lasagna mixed with vanilla ice cream and ate A LOT of mashed potato. That would explain my love for mashed potato, thankfully the lasagna with ice cream craving didn’t get passed on to me!
