Easter 2017

Veggie Mama | Homestyle vegetarian recipes and tales from a Melbourne mum

Was really rather quiet, actually. We had a birthday party on the Friday (Easter Egg Hunt #1), an Easter Egg Hunt (#2) on Saturday, and a very chilled Easter Sunday at home. Egg Hunt #3 took place in the back yard and then we sat about playing LEGO and reading until brunchtime. I made Delia Smith’s zucchini and feta cakes to have with eggs and the usual breakfasty items and they were great. Like a big zucchini-y, cheesy hash brown.

Poor Bobbin has not been himself what with the infection and surgery. He’s needed extra cuddles, which I’m happy to give. He’s such a lovely cat, it’s sad to see him off his game. Betsy has hated the collar he’s been wearing and has been hissing at him constantly. It’s comical but also terrifying at 2am.

How great are these little easter buckets? I bought them from Larkstore years ago – they’re just the right size to fit in a handful of eggs and not much more. I can never remember which colour belongs to which child, but they seem to figure it out no problem. I figured with three egg hunts (and a visit from the Easter Bunny bringing a bigger egg) we could pool the spoils into the family basket and then the girls couldĀ keep whatever they could fit in their buckets.

Neither Lunchbox or I are huge chocolate eaters and I can guarantee you these eggs will still be here come October. The little pastel eggs are the worst tasting and even Bigs won’t eat them. I think they’ll be destined for some “chop chip cookies” at some point. Maybe. One day.

Sunday we went to Trivia at the Cornish Arms and sadly, came second behind a tied first (which meant no runner-up prize for us, bummer). We also went to another pub where I tried to follow a game of AFL and failed dreadfully but never mind there was a Bon Jovi cover band playing.

Monday I caught up on reading and get this – binge-watching the Bush Tucker Man. it was AWESOME. He’s so great.

It ended up being a bit of a shuffled work-at-odd-hours week after that and the whole back-to-school thing. We also have a school sports day on Friday, another of my work days, so this week will be out of order too. A quick overnighter in Ballarat will have me trying to figure out what actual day it is… surely next week we’ll finally get our groove back. I feel like we’ve never had a “normal” week since the year started, and I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to it.

I always feel a bit weird on ANZAC Day, sad and grateful and unsure how to go about commemorating it in an inclusive way. But I’m gonna go hug my fam and wish you well.

(PS thanks for the birthday love! It was AWESOME.)

I also have am in a weird headspace on ANZAC day – I can’t imagine sending my sons off to war and them never coming home. And I think that the world is in such a precarious position with Donald Trump in power. My husband said to me that I shouldn’t worry as they wouldn’t be sending our 4 year old, 2 year old and 6 month old off to war – but these be crazy times and I pray that everyone can just keep a cool head and keep the world a safe place.
