Kid food ideas: snacks

March 11, 2014 by Stacey 20 Comments

We were getting back into the swing of things snack-wise before the move, and I relished the chance to get creative with kid food.

Then we moved, and I was throwing peanut butter sandwiches and handfuls of sultanas at them at regular intervals. I think it’s time to step it up a notch! Anyway, before we moved, this was what was happening at toddler snack time…IMG_3290We were getting colourful with Ikea ice trays, filling them with chopped banana, strawberries and blueberries, sultanas, cashews (for the older kid with actual teeth!), and some Cocoa Pop knockoffs (I think they were from Aldi? I can’t remember!). Oh and little round crackers that came in special Christmas cracker trios from Aldi.

Orange segments, grissini, yogurt buttons, goji berries and a slice of dried apple.

And Katie180’s banana-almond-cacao pudding. Delicioso!

What’s on the snack table at your place?

A big hit with Blake right now is the chia pods from Woolies, date loaf ( recipe from BabyMac but I switched to wholemeal flour), yogurt covered sultanas, or some fruit Turkish toast. The kid hates sitting still so it’s food on the move & very very messy floors for us 🙂

Have you not seen the Kelly Slater ad?!!! LOL
Its a little chia pudding thing made with chis seeds ( der), coconut milk & then there are a few different flavours- mango, banana, vanilla & blueberry. Now that I know he loves them I’m going to try & make them myslef because as far as I can see on Pinterest they aren’t that hard.
I thought I’d love them but I kinda didn’t but I’m glad Blake does. Even though is is lactose intolerant one of these a week doesn’t seem to have any impact on him but cheese….god help us! And when you go searching for baby/toddler snacks so many of them have cheese in them!!

FYI- I made my own chia pudding! Its way better than the Woolies one ( of course). I still probably wouldnt eat a heap of it but its definetly nicer 🙂

Oh that’s good! I don’t know that I would enjoy chia pudding all that much. Plus it would be expensive to make!

Love all these ideas. After school (and mostly for the big boys) ours consists of a piece of fruit and either a hot cross bun/raisin toast or an icy pole/mini Aldi ice cream – it all depends on the weather! My littlest guys loves his crackers, any sort of melon and cheese stick for morning tea.

I cannot get my kids to eat cheese sticks! They did take a nibble of a babybel the other day, so I’ll keep on trucking. When I was pregnant in summer, I ate a box of Aldi iceblocks every few days!

Have been trying to get poppy to eat nuts without success – until I offered her a macadamia dipped in chocolate – downed in one! That’s a win! And yes, occasional snack. She is still digging watermelon and corn thins as fav snacks 🙂

haha i would be the last person to judge you on how often your kid eats chocolate-covered macadamias! Abby will do cashews, but that’s it.

I need to try the ice cube tray idea for snacks. My 1 year old eats everything and my three year old is the fussy pot. My kids get a selection of fruit, cheese, yoghurt covered sultanas, yoghurt and any home baking I do.

I wanted to do yogurt-covered sultanas, but I’m worried peps will choke. She only JUST got molars and there’s only two. She’s got no clue, haha. Love the baking, we do a lot of that too. We should just come to eat at your house!

My boy’s been snacking on “Daddy crackers” -those japanese soy and seaweed rice cracker things, pumpkin seeds and pine-nuts, blueberries (boohoo that they’re going out of season), ricecakes with vegemite, oranges and vibrant, spinachy green smoothies.

We occasionally use our larger ice-cruby tray for dinners as well. Mini-muffin pans work as well 🙂

Here’s my recipe for Chocolate Bliss Balls – perfect for kids for snacks and so yummy and healthy! Be careful if sending it to kindy or school in lunch boxes though because it does contain almond meal. http://www.applebeelane.com/2014/02/24/chocolate-bliss-balls/

      It’s the goji berries, isn’t it? Don’t be fooled… they’re not even organic 😉
