I have a confession to make.
I am a thief.
In 1990 I coveted my neighbour’s homemade Chipmunks “Born To Rock” tape so badly that it somehow ended up at my place, in heavy rotation on our beat up old tape deck. When my neighbour was over one day, she spotted the tape on our kitchen bench and asked if it was hers. I mean, it had to be, she’d written “Cipmaks” on it, but dear reader I LIED and told her that for some reason I’d spelled it the same when I made a copy of her copy.
I’m sorry Allison. The lure of the Chipettes singing Heaven is a Place on Earth was just too much.
You see, when I was a young’un, my sister and cousin and I were pretty obsessed with the movie The Chipmunk Adventure, where the chipmunks race around the world in hot air balloons, and it’s become a bit of a thing for us. HEY DON’T YOU KNOW THAT WE’RE OFF TO SEEEEE THE WORLD! WE’RE OFF TO FIND OUR DREAMS!
“Miss Miller… I want Alvin, Simon, and Theodore to meet me in Europe. Bye bye!”
To be honest, when Eleanor sings to the orphaned baby penguin, we all still get a bit emo.
The Chipmunks still hang out and do stuff from time to time (and Dave now looks suspiciously like Jason Lee, and if you know me, you know I don’t mind that one bit), and recently they went on a road trip to stop Dave from proposing to his girlfriend (thanks, boys!) so we had a little party to celebrate their new movie Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Road Chip being released to iTunes. It was also my kid’s fifth birthday, but you know, not as important.
It was so fun seeing the little ones hang out and watch the movie and meet Alvin (I never got to do that as a child and I even stole in his name!) and make the same memories with each other like I have with my family.
Maybe they’ll call each other and randomly shout “DAVID, ARE YOU DRUNK?!”… I mean, we can only hope.
It’s made me think of so much I’m showing them from my own childhood in the hopes that they’ll love it as much as I did – Rainbow Brite, Sooty, Ninja Turtles… ebay had never known such a crusade. I may even let them play with that mint-condition 1982 Blue Belle one day. We’ll see.
What have you shared with your kids from your childhood? Star Wars? My Little Pony? Return to Oz (not sure my mother’s ever forgiven me for calling her Mombi for about eight years straight)? Samurai Pizza Cats? THE SMOGGIES?!!
Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Road Chip is out now on iTunes and on Blu-ray & DVD, March 31
Thanks to 20th Century Fox for providing the movie, the food and the loot – it’s gonna be hard to top a real Alvin for the next birthday party. I may as well give up now.
