Nostalgia TV

July 30, 2014 by Stacey 38 Comments

Do you know what’s been on high rotation around here?

This:

So much so, that I’ve had to make the big sister a Rainbow Brite costume because it’s not 1984 and I can’t just buy one from the shops. It all began when we were all hanging out in my bed one Saturday morning. Too young for regular Saturday cartoons, I showed my kids a YouTube video of The Wombles. Then Henry’s Cat. Each day was something new, we watched endless episodes of The Sooty Show (this was Biggie’s favourite episode, mine was when they were teaching how to count by counting cups of tea), we watched the Care Bears Movie, and nobody was interested in Pound Puppies but me.

I have every intention of introducing Jem, Poochie, Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Bananaman, She-Ra, The Wuzzles, Gummi Bears, The Snorks, The Smurfs, Fraggle Rock, Dangermouse, Inspector Gadget, Barbie and the Rockers, Roger Ramjet, David the Gnome, My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake, Ninja Turtles, and that one show about tiny people on an island cleaning pollution out of the ocean who’s name I can never remember. When I remember it.

Oh my god, wait – it’s The Smoggies! And the little people on the island were Suntots! Man, I’ve asked people this question for YEARS and nobody ever knew what the hell I was talking about.

I have so many more up my sleeve (wait til we get to the ’90s!) What was your childhood favourite?

I loved those shows where Tony Robbinson would just narrate a story about frogs and people and whatever while walking around the place… and i feel compeled to introduce the yard ape to “Hunter”.

Yep Hunter is at the top of my list! But harder to find 🙁 We had to watch it at school and I sing the theme song every time someone names their kid Hunter.

Was that Fat Tulip’s Garden? I have vague memories of loving that too. I was a massive Care Bears fan – my neighbor taped over the VHS copy she had because I demanded to watch it every time I was over there! Ninja Turtles also ruled.

The Mysterious Cities of Gold. Oh Yes.

I am actually in a really bad mood with modern children’s TV today. For the first time this morning my 2 year old daughter told me that a cartoon was for boys, not for girls (It was Max Steel) and there was no persuading her until she saw a female character on there.

How does it even happen?!?! It’s not like she gets it from us, we live and breathe moveable gender roles every day FFS – I’m the worker, the old man is the stay at home dad!

The Flinstones, the Jetsons, the Smurfs, Scooby Doo….now that’s how you do kids cartoons!

But I’m a bit pissed with the Jetsons these days. They totally made out we’d have flying cars by the 2000’s. Where’s my flying car mofo’s!!!?

Ha ha…we have a few Fraggles books…I keep meaning to find the show for C.
And if you need a Jem costume, just shout…it was my go to Halloween costume for most of my adult years. Truly outrageous!

I loved this trip down Memory Lane. I loved the Mr Men, Pipkins and Bagpuss, but you’d have to be an old fogey and have grown up in the mother country to remember them. They just don’t make programmes like they used to! Oh, and the Wombles. Weren’t they the cutest?

I loved fraggle rock! I bought it years ago on DVD s my kiddies could share in my childhood, thankfully they loved it too! We are all big Jim Henson fans in this house. Another favourite was Monkey Magic, that show was so weird but awesome!
