I am SO glad that reading is not a monogamous activity, because I cheat on my reading materials with other reading materials every single day. A legitimate hussy, I am. A book slut, if you will.
When Abby was born, I soon realised I didn’t have the time or the brain capacity to read actual books any more. I often read at night in the bath, but I found I was reading more What To Expect in Baby’s First Year and less anything I would normally read. I also realised that magazines afforded reading in bite-size articles that could be flipped with one hand while feeding. The trouble was I hated most magazines you can get at the newsagent (tabloids make me actually murderous and that’s probably bad for one’s milk I imagine), so I popped a Hello! magazine in the trolley with every grocery shop, and I gawped at the newly married Royal couple, and inside stately homes of various British celebrities. It was a bit of fun.
And then. Oh and then I found the Zinio app on my iPad (not sponsored but hey, Zinio – get at me) and I could get a YEAR’S worth of magazine subscriptions sometimes for as little as five bucks. I also bought the Oprah magazine subscription on the Newsstand app for a fricken’ dollar ninety nine a MONTH instead of $12. I cancelled my actual subscription that I’d ordered from the States and revelled in drowning in magazines.
So three years later I still buy books like I have time to read them. And I do make time, but it’s awful slow-going. I have the most regretful backup. Literary constipation. And TWO parcels of books I ordered online have just landed on my doorstep. It’s criminal.
In an attempt to get a handle on where I’ve spread myself, I shall list them here for your amusement. And also a little bit of accountability. I want to stop starting new things and date just one book at a time until it’s done.
Ha. In my dreams.
Ok, so as of May 21, 2014, I have yet to get through (and this isn’t counting the books that have been sitting on my shelves for years, this is just what I’ve bought recently):
Vantastic (a gift from the gorgeous Foxslane blog. Nearly finished this one!)
Kate (A biography of Kate Middleton)
Is That it? (The Bob Geldof book. Almost done with it!)
Keating: The Inside Story (This one has been sitting on the shelf next to the bath for ages. It’s not blowing my socks off. If I even wore socks in the bath. I think I’d prefer to read the one Paul Keating wrote himself).
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (Ditto sitting next to the bath for a while. I put it down when I picked up the Bob book, but I’ll finish it, I swear!)
The Way of the Happy Woman (I’ve read the beginning, and the parts pertaining to autumn and winter. I love it. Recommended by Jodi)
Under Wildwood (These two are aimed at older kids, but I’m going to read it aloud to my girls anyway!)
An Everlasting Meal (recommended by both Jodi and Steph)
This is actually ridiculous. It’s an illness.
Magazine subscriptions I’m still getting through from the middle of last year:
Good Housekeeping (US)
Martha Stewart Living
Disney Family Fun
Ladies Home Journal (US)
Scholastic Parent and Child
New 2014 Subscriptions:
All of the above, plus
Better Homes and Gardens (US)
Every Day with Rachael Ray
This is like, a hundred issues… I’m an idiot.
So. Let’s see if next time I get to this list I’ve made a dent!
What about you? What’s on your nightstand? Are you a book slut? We need help.
