Unfortunately my “coming down with something” premonition in yesterday’s newsletter has proven true. So my Saturday loves are coming to you live from me in mah bed! Catching up on reading and general snoozing. I think something in the way I’ve been going about my days is definitely off, and I need a bit of a reassessment.
I fell down a bit of a Guardian UK “How to Eat” rabbit hole this morning – favourites include omelette, cheese sandwich, and quiche. So much so I’m making quiche for dinner this evening (caramelised onion, if you’re curious, doctoring this old favourite recipe).
This feature on Daniel Johns in the Saturday Paper I found lying behind the bookshelf. He’s fascinating.
Book-wise, I’m carrying on with last week’s choices – as soon as I finish Murder on the Orient Express, I’ll be moving on to The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum, as per my dusty bookshelf challenge (I’m curently 7 from 17, I got very distracted in Bali last year and read 6 books not on the list, though I’ve been slogging away slowly but surely).
Also: 10 Foodie Mums you NEED to Be Following on Instagram, over at Mumtastic. I’m in it! Crazy.
I made these vanilla cupcakes for a school bake sale (10/10), and chucked some frozen ricotta ravioli into some creamy mushroom sauce last night as everyone else had pizza, but I was desperate for some comfort food. That sauce was an 11/10 and I will be making it again. Dare I say my best creamy mushroom sauce yet? Yeah ok, I’ll say it.
I also had a very happy surprise delivery on Thursday of an outrageously generous box of fruit and veg from The Organic Place, so have been scarfing organic strawberries and snow peas and button mushrooms every time I pass the fridge. Biggie’s lunchbox was the envy of the internet the following day, and I chowed down on a solo veggie platter for one for lunch today, I felt very virtuous indeed.
Oh yeah, and there was also the mini apple pie episode.
I missed a few episodes of MKR as I was out at committee meetings and various other things this week, but I did watch several episodes of Gilmore Girls (yay!) and Carly and I watched Reality Bites for Sweet Teen Club. I wasn’t right for days afterward, I 100% daydreamed about Ethan Hawke and got nothing done.
Whatever I’ve found in the clean washing basket amidst the chaos of just trying to get places on time and tasks completed. There has been a lot of denim shorts (Levis at Costco! $25!) and forgiving tops. Also there was that one day that was freezing and I wore a hoodie and an annoyed face.
- This cold and flu tonic with a rather large shot of brandy helping me through this whatever lurgy.
- My Valentine’s Day brunch at Ray Cafe last week – they deep fry haloumi!!!
- My husband just hung out two loads of washing
- I’ve barely had to move all day
- The weather is phenomenal
- Which I’m wasting in bed
- A new succulent pot (yes another!) handmade by a fellow school mum purchased on Friday
- Two happy kids
- The free gerberas I received when I bought a few groceries from La Manna Fresh this morning, they’re so cute! And so very 90s.
Shout out to my auntie Miriam, who made the easy ricotta gnocchi with roasted tomato sauce and chunky pesto – she did a bang-up job!
On this Day
2012: Gnocchi with Roasted Sweet Potato and Garlic Cream Sauce. I’m sensing a theme here. Also: picture bad, recipe good.
2013: Two Under Two: How Did I Do it? Oh boy, this one was popular. I look tired.
2014: Snapshots of my Melbourne Month – I was a newbie! Also sorry to say my knowledge of 15th century Micronesia still has not expanded.
Have a great weekend, mates!
