This is what I am doing. On October 28, 2008, I was sitting in the library at uni, where I was found pretty often. I had just joined Twitter (thanks to the revamped Britney Spears website – I signed up to this newfangled social media thingamybob they recommended, and they generated my first tweet ever, which said “being a Britneyphile”), and I can’t remember what sparked it, but I started a blog. I thought about the name for a while, before settling on “confessions of a nerd”. My first post talked about how much I was an indoors girl, that I always had to take a jumper wherever I went. RIVETING STUFF.
I told my husband that I’d started a blog and he was all one-eyebrow-raisy about it. “My name is Rupert. This is my cat”, he joked to me, referencing a Ricky Gervais skit where he makes fun of people writing websites on the internet about nothing. I got his point, but I still wanted to do it.
I pottered about there for a little while, until I started Veggie Mama in 2010. I write about that here. And here. And here. And even here.
Do you have a blog? What were YOU thinking when you started it?
As I was sitting in my loungeroom wondering what to do with my life – my 12 hour a day marketing career wasn’t working for me or the girls, so I had to find something else. So as I was watching Nigella, loving her but being secretly appalled at the amount of butter, oil, cheese and everything else that she used that was unnecessary, I thought I’m going to write a cookbook. I LOVE cooking and my recipes are pretty good. I knew how to make a good just about anything and over the years I’d refined all my fat laden faves into lighter versions. THAT’S what I’ll do. But then I thought there is no way I’m going to get a book deal so what do I do now? A website. A blog. A website with a blog. And so The Moodie Foodie was born. Born from my love of Nigella (LOVE her) and healthy food. So glad you started yours:)
How cool is Nigella! I’m on her side… that amount of butter is TOTALLY necessary.
I was sitting in the same building on a different floor that fateful day confessions of a nerd was started. Go the ‘berry!
I think I was wagging class.
I was thinking of increasing sales for our business. I paid for a WordPress blog a few months ago but it was such a headache trying to figure out how to set it up (haven’t got past choosing a template yet), I’ve been ignoring it ever since. Hopefully I’ll do something with it before it expires.
Oh no, wordpress is the best! Blogs are so good for boosting sales x
I work in marketing, and was trying to translate what the cool kids (the web gurus) were talking about, so I decided to set up a website. It was a process. Initially it wasn’t about anything at all really and at very first, it was set up on Joomla (never.again!). I’d post random stories, repost funny stuff I’d seen about the place, and some of my recipes.
That was about two years ago, and it is only recently that I’ve found my groove. I wrote a post about it here: http://moderndaymissus.com/blog/an-eventful-couple-of-weeks-explained-a-confession-a-few-changes-and-a-new-outlook/
Oh, how things evolve!
yeah, what even is joomla?!
Do you know the only thing stopping me apart from the fact that I can’t settle on a URL/blog name is wtf to say in my first post, haha. Unsure if I should just go in and start writing or do a “Haiiiiii I am..” kind of thing. Dilemmas!
Just do it! Mine was stupid. But once it was done, I could move on!
I was wondering what I was going to do with the rest of my life because the kids had just left home, I didn’t have a job, and we’d just moved to Australia from Africa. Writing has always been an itch that needs to be scratched, so I started blogging about our childless adventures and the destinations we were discovering in Western Australia. ZigaZag flat-lined for so long that I thought I should instead start writing snail mail again to Mum who was the only one reading it. Then something gave it the kiss of life, something happened and now there’s no turning back. I’ve started Lifestyle Fifty, a second blog for Fun, Feisty, Funky Women over 50 and I can honestly say that I’m as busy as I’ve ever been and blogging has changed my life. .. Thanks for a great post that will get lots of people thinking 🙂
Oh gosh, I love the sound of that!
Great question Stacey. I started blogging a bit over a year ago and I think I was thinking that I needed something to keep me occupied while I was on maternity leave from my mag job. I then started suffering from PND and post natal anxiety and writing was (and is) one of the best ways to get all that stuff in my head out. I guess I was fortunate in a sense as have always been very open and don’t believe in keeping those kinds of things behind closed doors so was able to share my experiences openly and honestly. I kept blogging as I found that I enjoyed the online world a little more than the world of print and discovered the ever enticing world of /proper’ blogging and freelance writing which gives me the opportunity to do what I enjoy and be around for my son.
I bet people have been so grateful you started a blog. I agree, it’s so important to share those things and have people be able to find them x
I’m really glad your started your bog cause I think its a little bit cool :).
I have a a new blog, it probably wont be here this time next year but I am enjoying the journey right now. I started it to record this precious life as it passes us by but who knows where it may take me. Keep blogging Mama!
You keep blogging too!
And isn’t the world lucky you did decide to blog! I have a blog (www.hippiemumma.com) and I wanted to share my healthy world with everyone. I guess. I don’t know!
I agree, I really don’t/didn’t know either!
Nope and I love your blog Stacey so you did a good thing babes x
You’re always so encouraging! 🙂
I wrote two first posts & hit publish but nobody knew about my blog so they were deleted in favour of my first recipe, a Meatless Monday number.
I started a blog to WRITE! Cos I love it :))
bullshit, I knew!
miss stacey, I am adoring your 31 days!
and I am relating to a lot of your posts in this series. the unconventional educational path, the misspent youth, the passion for the words, the introversion… I am hearing you.
what was I thinking when I started blogging? so many things and also just, here goes nothing. I am a sucker for the written word, confessions, connections, things that look pretty and being a master of my tiny universe. that’s a blogger’s profile, yeah? 😉
haha yes, if you’re not me! but I do like the written word. and food.
I started a blog to post about all the food I was cooking, and have just realised I haven’t posted about food and cooking in a loooooong time… Might need to change that!
yes goodness knows what I”m doing here! I haven’t posted about food in almost a month.
I started at blog in 2011. It was an extension of my work alternative health. The idea was that I could be held accountable for my ‘healing journey’ ( yes really) if I was writing. I haven’t looked back and just zipped over to ancientwisdomformodernwellness.com after playing happily over on blogger for that first few years. Loving this series! Xx
How much fun is blogging!
I remember starting a few blogs as a teenager. It served me well as a creative outlet and having something on the web which was mine was pretty cool.
These days, I’m much to practical and share fashion steals at http://www.salestoyou.com.au In my spare time, I love reading blogs though!
I remember starting a diary on diaryland in 2002… the internet wasn’t around when I was a teenager! Well, it was, but considering I wasn’t part of the US military, I kinda missed out.
I was filled with excitement. I only started my blog a few months ago but I think things are going well. Once I got some posts published, and was ready to “share” the site on facebook, I was just hoping that I would really really like blogging. I’m so thankful that I do!

isn’t it crazy how much it takes a hold of you!
We’d just moved, I didn’t know anyone in our area and it was summer holidays, so I wasn’t getting any work. J was being driven mad by my lack of something to do, so I started a blog. That was 2 years ago and I started The Life of Clare just over 12 months ago.
And do you love it?!
Sometimes I don’t love blogging but I love the community. I just always wish I had more time.
Same, same and same xx
