My top 5 blogs of all time

October 29, 2013 by Stacey 36 Comments

I have SO MANY favourite blogs. And as I was just saying to someone this morning, my tastes change as my life does, so what I loved a few years ago might not be what I love today. But there are a few that I always, always come back to for whatever reason.

Oh and I’m ruling out Fat Mum Slim because I talk about her enough on here, haha.

Foxs Lane

I can’t remember when I first read Kate’s blog, but I do know I was sucked in by the beautiful photography, the honest writing, the organic farm, the wood stove. Kate’s is one of the only blogs I have sent straight to my email so I never miss it. I genuinely enjoy seeing an email drop in with a new post. Her children are adorable, her farmer hunky, and her stories compelling. She is utterly divine and I hope she never stops writing as long as I live.

The Beetle Shack

I started reading Em’s blog more than a year ago now, and I was hooked from the start. Her blog looked beautiful, her stories about motherhood, art, and living honestly were so refreshing, so relatable, and so inspiring. She doesn’t sugar-coat anything, and I totally love that about her. I learn so much from her and her blog, and it helps that every single person in her family is easy on the eye. I’d like to bake her a cake and make her a cup of tea and fold her washing while she talks to me about creating a creative home. No scratch that, she can make me a woodfired pizza in her backyard oven.

Bitches Gotta Eat

I’m probably considered a recent convert to Samantha’s blog, but holy shit when I fell, I fell hard. I found her from a tweet from Schmutzie, whom I found through Edenland. I did that weird scream-choke-laugh straight up reading her blog, and I may have even slapped my thigh. She is the ultimate in hilarious, and I’m forever grateful her writing is a part of my life. Oh and her facebook page – she posts the most amazing pictures, stories, and creepy Craigslist ads. I stalk her pretty mightily on Instagram, and pre-ordered her book on Amazon a few months ago. Her tales of dating and living in Chicago (with amusing anecdotes of her daily struggle with Crohn’s Disease) are incredibly entertaining, and she is fearless and bold with her writing. I literally fist-pump when her posts land in my inbox. And I never fist-pump anything. She would be stoked with all this fisting and pumping.

Magnetoboldtoo

Is probably my utmost favourite Australian blog. For real. She is SO funny, and so heartfelt and a megafuckinggood writer. Nobody can make me laugh and cry in the same paragraph like she does. Or know how to make my own Mirror of Erised, or a Lego cake. She writes about everything that takes her fancy, including hilarious and gut-wrenching stories of her autistic 15-year-old son. She is so much more to me than just a blogger friend, she is a real friend and is absolutely not revered enough. She should be made queen of the world and given diamonds and riches and jugs of margaritas. She loves hot salty fries, shoes, and giving me shit. And she is my favourite.

Hit me! who are your favourites?

How to select just five????? How did you do it? I think the ones that I love are the ones that have influenced me the most: Fat Mum Slim (I didn’t know there was a blogging world out there until Chantelle), Maxabella Loves… (because she’s just so real too), Beetle Shack (for exactly the same reasons as you’ve said), Harper’s Happenings (oh, you would LOVE her, she’s so funny!), and Claire Hewitt (I never miss a post. She’s so dry, I love it). That was a struggle, but I did it. Perhaps this is a post I should share now I’ve done the hard yards??? Thanks for your inspiration. Already laughing at Bitches Gotta Eat. x

I love all these too! Harper’s Happenings is SO funny, I love it. I think I just tried to list all the blogs I never miss, or have never fallen out of love with. My blog roll is my favourites, but these five are rock-solid. It was hard, though!

Great list lady ! My top would be-

Meet Me at Mikes- Pip was my first blog crush & I still love her HEAPS! She is deadest one of the nicest people I’ve ever met on the net.
Foxs Lane- same reasons as you. The life Kate & Bren have just seems perfection to me.
Veggie Mama- because you’re one of the best people. I love your writing, the fact you genuinely interact with your readers & that you reached out to offer advice/help after I had Blake. Your the kind of gal I want to be friends with in real life.
Beetle Shack- I’m a recent convert & I love the way Em writes. It’s weird but I never comment over there…
Edenland- doubt I need to explain why. The lady can right!
Hugo & Elsa- Michelle makes want to move to Tasmania more than I already do. I’m so excited she is writing a book!
Gourmet Girlfriend- makes me want to be a better parent & cook better food. Ruth is awesome.
BabyMac- makes me laugh & be envious of how clean her house is – how does she do it??!!!
I could go on & on because I’m a blog addict!! I’m a bit like you too in the fact that my reading list changes with my needs/taste/hobbies/life but this list is here to stay 🙂

I love all of these! Except me, obvs. That’d be weird.
And we could totally be friends. I think you’re rad.

Alright, I just had a look around and signed up to the two I wasn’t already reading (bithcesgottaeat and magnetoboldtoo), but enough already! How on earth do you decide when to stop following?? There are far too many funny and fabulous people out there for the few short moments I have in the day to, ya know, actually read them. Or try thier recipes. Or say to myself I will try that craft (with no follow-through). Or waste time googling where I can get that pretty thing (ahem, Beetleshack).

Ps. My all time favourite is Girls Gone Child. She is my inner monologue.

Oh my! Well, hey there! No, you do kindly provide links – so many links, which then has me looking things up and seeing if I can go and look at them in store, or find it cheaper or something similar, etc and before you know it I want too many cushions than I know what to do with, haha! Not good when at the same time I’m also trying to be more minimalistic.

I love how having kids brings so much colour into our worlds, and you incorporate it just so beautifully. Love your blog. X

Oh I love her. LOVE. She encapsulates all the things I think about raising girls to be kickass and not bringing our own weird hangups and parenting issues into our kids’ lives. She is so smart, I love everything she does.
I’ve actually gotten pretty lean and mean with my blog consumption, particularly over the last year. I put them all into a Feedly reader, and I am ruthless with the ones that I don’t read any more for whatever reason – they get deleted straight up! I don’t have much time and I want to spend it on stuff I do love reading. So my reader is in three sections: must reads, food, and general. I catch up with my must-reads pretty regularly, food I do when I’m watching something else and I can just scroll through the pretty pictures mindlessly and pin whatever I think looks good for later, and general I have a look at if I’ve got a spare hour or so on the weekend to chill. I cherry-pick those posts that sound good, and don’t read everything or I’d never get anything done! then I “clear” that whole blog, read and unread posts, ready for the new posts to drop in. It keeps my reader pretty up-to-date. Especially if I delete the blogs that I find I’m avoiding, or clearing too much of. BAM. Hardcore badass blog reader over here x

I’m terrible at these top five lists, I’m way to fickle from day to day to stay with just five blogs Smitten Kitchen brought me into the world of food blogs with her humor and simple delicious looking food but my new favorite food blog at this moment is the Skint Foodie and it’s not really about the food because its usually fairly meat focused but because of his humor and honesty – The Skint Foodie is a recovering alcoholic, living in a council flat in Peckham on a pension who manages to eat like a prince. He recently won The Observers best food blog, its not your average food blog but really worth checking out.

Haha yeah my tastes keep changing, but my love for these five never has. I have a new “favourite” every week! I love Smitten Kitchen too, she’s totally in my reader. And I’ve never heard of Skint Foodie, although that sounds EXACTLY the kind of blog I’d love! Thanks for the tip!

So many to choose and I keep stumbling on more. I always find myself heading to the Beetleshack, BabyMac, Woogsworld, Katrina from the block, A Beach Cottage, your lovely self and Lemon Rhodes of late. I guess im attracted to good aussie wit and humour, keeping it real, family matters, house styling and beautiful photography.
