Veggie Baby Food – Peach Mango Smoothie

February 22, 2012 by Stacey 11 Comments

I am still amazingly surprised that Veggie Baby eats Greek yogurt. Even I can’t have it unless there’s honey or something to counter the sourness of it. All she needs is a spoon of fruit mixed in and she’s right to go.

Recently I gave her a tub to play with to keep her quiet while we were waiting for a meal at a cafe. I thought she’d like to feel how cold it was and maybe roll it around a bit. Instead she bit through the top and sucked the yogurt out from the resulting hole. Like it was the most delicious thing she’d ever tasted. Crazy.

This recipe is a bit fun, because it’s pretty much what I would have in a smoothie, just a little thicker for a spoon. She loved it.

I even cut corners by using canned fruit – canned mango can be very useful!

For one serving:

Ingredients
2 canned peach halves
2 canned mango pieces
1.5 tbs greek yogurt (or more if you have a brave baby)
1/2 tsp chia seeds
1 tsp flaxseed meal
milk of your choice if you think it’s too thick.

Directions

1. Blend!

Can they have yoghurt and dairy before the age of one?

I wondered that too. I heard they couldn't have cow's milk as a drink and things, but would see yogurt and cheese in a ton of baby recipes. I was SO CONFUSED!
I did a lot of research, and the consensus was that babies shouldn't drink cow's milk as a replacement for breastmilk or formula until 12 months, as their stomachs are not able to deal with it. However, small amounts of dairy like yogurts, custards and cheeses can be introduced from 9 months. Some of the reasons were that dairy in these amounts were not harmful, and that confusion about how much dairy a baby can tolerate would be less if it was totally banned as a drink until 12 months, rather than people forgoing breastmilk or formula thinking it would be ok.

Here are two links that might help: http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Eating_tips_for_children_(1)_babies?open http://kidshealth.chw.edu.au/fact-sheets/babys-first-foods

both from Australian governmental and hospital resources.

oh and by “milk of your choice” that was my lazy way of writing breastmilk/formula/rice milk/soy milk/dairy milk… I figured people would use what they were comfortable with.

Yum! I will try this for E (23 months) for dessert. I am also amazed by her willingness to eat plain yoghurt. Sometimes I zap berries in the microwave for 30 seconds to soften them, then mix it into plain yoghurt, if I'm feeling particularly lazy just a few drops of vanilla essence.

The new nhmrc guidelines waiting release say there is no order to introducing foods.  This includes dairy in food form.  So introduce dairy products from around 6 months, but don't replace the breast or the bottle until 12 months.

It's good for omega 3 for veggies cos we don't eat fish. Or fish oil. Or fish oil capsules created for kids. Clearly my baby's brain would be severely lacking in smarts because I was such a negligent mother as to ignore her omega 3 needs! Having said that, I forget it most of the time, haha x
