Veggie Mama Loves

The weather today is awesome for reading and baking…. so I did both! Also hiding out trying to put off vacuuming the stairs because that is actual torture. We have really dark carpet (and two kids and two cats) so errthang shows up there and it’s impossible to ignore (although I do). The stairs are my nemesis. Two bloody lots.

After the chemist told me to REMOVE STRESS on Friday, and a giant week of everyone being full of bugs (not the good kind), I’ve done exactly as ordered. There’ll be more of that this afternoon, including crochet and this epic list of awesome 90s stuff on Netflix, and takeaway Indian for dinner. DO NOT DISTURB.

Reads

I started The Good Gut today, a book about human microbiota by a couple of pretty clued-up scientists doing research in the US. Absolutely fascinating. I can’t wait to get more into it, at the moment it’s all very background-describey. I wanted to get it after I heard them on a podcast recently, and they were making a lot of sense.

It may have been the same podcast, I can’t remember, but I also heard an interview with Dr Michael Greger, the dude behind nutritionfacts.org. He wrote a book called How Not to Die, which is a culmination of his years of wading through medical research and science findings about health and nutrition. I’ve cracked it but with everybody sick all this week I’ve had zero time to get stuck in. Will be reading more on my flights Tuesday and Wednesday.

Eats

So today I made Waka Flocka Flame’s vegan blueberry muffins but I changed them up a little bit. They are AWESOME. Yes, caps. I also whizzed up Deliciously Ella’s vegan brazil nut cheese, and have put some cashews on to soak so I can make these quinoa and spinach enchiladas tomorrow. We’ve some homemade enchilada sauce that needs using so I’m really looking forward to it. Oh BTW I used Ella’s recipe from her book, and it didn’t say to use any water, but I did (otherwise it would never go creamy), and that link to her site tells you to. Not sure I added a full 1/2 cup but I did add enough to make the mixture work.

Last week I went to Smith and Daughters with Chelsey from Like a Vegan and we ate so much we got the sweats. I tried the chicken and waffles and also ordered the cheesy fries because cheesy fries, and the creamy mushrooms because I consider a trip there without them wasted. I ended up eating the mushrooms the next day for lunch and they come up so well.

For my birthday last weekend I picked up a takeaway salad from Moroccan Deli-cacy (thumbs up) and among other things, a La Vera blue cheese and it nearly did me in. I swear to god I ate almost the whole thing on my own (what’s a party without making yourself sick on cheese), it was incredible. Later that night after a cocktail at George’s bar (the George Costanza-themed one), I figured I could handle a little something so we went to Pabu where I soothed myself with some epic veg sushi. Their lychee sparkling sake helped. The last time I went I got the agedashi tofu and the nasu dengaku and can give them the veggie mama seal of approval (official). I have to say, though, I was pretty disappointed to hear they’d canned the vegan menu, that was so helpful.

Y’all, I made it through season 5 of Downton, thanks to my kids vomiting for days on end. Now to catch up on season 6! I also started Outlander now that it’s on Netflix, I read it the year before last and quite liked it. Not sure I could be arsed reading any more of the series, but I like Scotland and history and Jamie in nothing but a kilt.

I also did a few Nigella Summers, but wasn’t really paying attention as I was trying to catch up on work. I did watch the finale of MKR and was well pleased with the result, and will be tuning into Masterchef this evening.

I introduced the kids to Drop Dead Fred (it was time) and Lunchbox came to me later saying Biggie had come to him slightly concerned because Fred was “messing up the place a bit”, so cute. We also brought out Little Rascals, which they loved.

Listens

The Empire Records soundtrack playlist is up, and I started listening to this episode of the Rich Roll podcast while I was going to sleep but it was so interesting I just lay awake, haha. John Joseph is crazy, his story is outrageous, and I love hearing his 80s New York hardcore accent, I could listen to him speak all day. Not gonna do an Ironman, tho.

The eBay winter jacket arrived! it’s soooo good. I’m so glad I got it. It’s not waterproof though so will still keep searching for my number-one pick, but I’m in no hurry. It will come to me when its good and ready.

Speaking of coming to me, these three also arrived in the mail today: AWESOME.

The Bohemian Traders black and white striped jumper, khaki utility vest, and black and white striped skirt. Not gonna lie, I’ve also got my eye on this raglan tee, stripy swing dress, and black prairie lace dress. Perfect for autumn and into winter.
