Lunchbox was showing me last night pictures he found on his phone of the girls when they were tiny – some I’d never seen before because #twoundertwo haze and also that he’d just snapped them and moved on. Ohhhhh my heart they were so cute. Little videos of Biggie mumbling her way through the ABC covered in yogurt, you know, that sort of thing.
He also had taken a few snaps of me with the girls when I didn’t know and they are just the best. Pyjamas, frizzy hair, washed-out face, but a lapful of chubby wriggly babes. Can’t think of anything better.
One of the pictures was our first holiday as a family of 4, when we drove around New Zealand’s south island. I had young Smalls in the ergo and we were hiking up Fox Glacier. I had never seen it before, but it was everything I had wanted when I thought about having kids. Strapping them to my back and seeing the world.
Sadly they’re too big to go on my back these days (I could totally still swing Smalls in an Ergo she’s just a wisp of a thing, but last time I tried it she wasn’t feeling well and cried “mumma take me out of your baaaag!”) but I still want to take them everywhere, open their eyes to the bigness of the planet we call home. We get a taste of it here in inner-city Melbourne, it’s the most multicultural upbringing I think I could give them right now, but nothing beats standing in places you’ve only ever dreamed of being.
Needless to say, I’m now planning our next holiday, haha.
It’s been a big week, recovering from pbevent and trying to catch up on housework and work and life and general stuff. The school holidays couldn’t have come at a better time. Today is warm(ish) and sunny, after a week of brutal grey skies and cold, cold rain. I feel good. Things are good.
HALLELUJAH I have finished The Bourne Identity. Don’t get me wrong, it was great – it was just long. Not something I usually complain about, granted, but for some reason it just felt like I was never, ever going to get to the end.
I went on a little Monday-night jaunt to a Yarra Valley cottage and ploughed through the rest by an open fire. What a way to go, eh?
Next up on my reading challenge list was The Thornbirds, so I threw it in my handbag for the flight to the Gold Coast for pbevent. BIG MISTAKE. I spent at least a good half an hour crying and being grateful for modern nit treatments. I’m too scared to pick it back up now, I thought the emo part would be anywhere other than DIRECTLY AT THE BEGINNING.
I tried Uber Eats last night for the first time ever and it was great. I got a burger at like, 9pm, right to my door. Bless you, Melbourne.
The fries at Juanita Peaches/All Day Donuts are an 11/10, we went yesterday for a last day of term treat.
YOU GUYS I STARTED WATCHING GAME OF THRONES. I know, a hundred years behind the rest of the population. I give Jon Snow 22/10.
We are also getting through Twin Peaks again so we can watch the new ones when they arrive, and also so I can do a STC episode on it.
It’s the early Jess episodes on Gilmore Girls I’m up to (the likelihood I’m going to get through all these episodes by November grows slimmer by the day) and heaven help us they’re good episodes. Oh Jess, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
TBH I don’t think Rory ends up with any of the dudes in the new season but there will be hell to pay if Lorelai doesn’t end up with Luke. HELL. TO. PAY. (even if she is too flaky for him and will probably drive me nuts).
More than a little bit obsessed with The Weeknd at the moment.
Ok so I bought a few things to take with me to PB – the cream Prairie Lace dress (on sale now) that I wore during my presentation, and the black Pia Midi dress which I am absolutely obsessed with. It’s such a beautiful dress. I wish it came in other colours because I would probably buy them all. Can be dressed for cold or warm weather (it’s quite light) and the skirt is just perfect. I do wear it with a belt though. It’s also on sale RIGHT NOWWWWWW.
The stripy skirt I was gifted and I’ve worn it to just about everything – book launches, plane trips, baby showers, the lot. It can be dressed up or down and I usually wear it with the long sleeve tee in black I bought and wore underneath everything in winter. It has rayon in it so moves really well and I also have pulled it out of the dirty washing pile and put it on more times than I care to remember and its always come up a treat.
I bought the Lace Panelled top in black because I didn’t have a fancy top to wear with jeans, just t-shirts and stuff. I’m so glad I did, even though I ummed and ahhed over it for ages. It’s dressy without being frou frou and I like that kind of shit.
On This Day
2010: Braised artichokes
2011: Mock Whitefish from the Tried Favourites Cookery Book, 1948 (the vintage cookbook pics are the best!)
2012: Occupy Veggie Mama: 40 weeks (ready to burst with Smalls. Full of the feels, most of them angry haha)
2013: Getting the kids to eat vegetables (stuff I was doing in the hopes it would actually work… it mostly has!)
2015: Strolling the streets of Portland (time to go back, I think)
Ok I’ve gotta go – the kids have put on the theme song to The Never Ending Story just too many times.
What have you been loving lately? I’m looking at cold drinks for hot weather – hook me up!
