The first time I read a Sweet Valley High book, I was about 10 years old and I was at a barbecue. I sat indoors and read the entire book from start to finish while everyone else was outside enjoying themselves. I was hooked from then on.
Every time I moved places, the first thing I did was check the library in my new town for issues I hadn’t read. I would eyeball new friends’ bookcases when I went over to hang out. I begged, borrowed and stole (ok I didn’t steal I don’t think but that would be a first) any and every book I ever could. Slowly over time I pieced my way through the OMG DRAMA lives of Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield, even the weird-ass sagas and homicidal maniac specials.
Carly and I have discussed the first 9 books of the Sweet Valley High series on our Sweet Teen Club podcast, and today we release the 10th – where SHOCK HORROR a girl who is known to *ahem* date around is audacious enough to think she’d be welcome on the cheerleading team.
Of course Wholesome Jessica (who… I thought also dated a different boy every week? but ok) cannot bear the thought of such a morally reprehensible teenager sullying her team’s good name and goes out of her way to manipulate everybody in sight to keep her out.
Not to mention there’s also a. a fight between Todd and Elizabeth over it because why not, b. reference to their perfect All-American good looks, and c. a bunch of overreacting and Jessica putting people in hospital with her sociopathic behaviour.
You can find out the surprising ending and our excessive eye-rolling over it it by listening here, on iTunes, or your favourite podcast app (what podcast app do you use? I heard overcast is good so I downloaded it a year ago and never used it again).
Also: how good is this!
What do you think? Did you read this book? Did you get into SVH? Would you just punch Jessica and be done with it or what?
I never really got into sweet valley high, but I was like this with babysitter club books
oh same, they’re coming too! Carly was more BSC than SVH so we’re gonna have a lot of fun 🙂
