Kid food: Snacks

September 1, 2014 by Stacey 22 Comments

Writing these posts always make me hungry.kid food ideas

Sultanas, yogurt drops, goji berries, cheerios, chocolate-covered sultanas (for something different!) and blueberries, back from when they were in season and weren’t $9.99 a punnet

(my hot tip? Get blueberries from Aldi. Great quality, lowest price I’ve seen!)

Raspberry and coconut muffins

Boiled egg and slices of sweet potato. I popped them in a bowl with some olive oil and stirred to coat. Then put under the grill for a few minutes each side.

kid food ideas

Mayver’s Hazelnut-Cacao spread sandwiches cut into stars, and sultanas.

lemon cake

Little lemon cakes.

What’s on the snack menu at your place?

Our go to snacks at the moment include; sliced banana, dried cranberries, saltanas, pretzels, pikelets (often plain but sometimes with jam or peanut butter for a special treat), homemade sweet potato chips, yoghurt, muesli bars.

Nice ideas. I’m all over Aldi blueberries too. Snacks here are very basic at the moment (winter laziness or something) so I’m feeling inspired to jazz it up a bit. Thanks for the kick up the butt to get creative!

We are supposed to be getting Aldi over here at some stage & if they have cheap berries I will be AAAALLLLLLL over them!

    I’m making these this week- http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/11300/vegie+muffins .

I’ve made them before & the toddler picked at them but I bloody loved them so I’m making them again & hoping he’ll take more interest. They freeze really well too.

I made the best veggie muffins once. They were like, 3/4 cheese.

I properly laughed when I read that. I’m dishing up cheese to the toddler pretty regularly & I’m sure I’ll horrify some if your readers but it’s plastic cheese!!! He won’t touch the real stuff.

Huge fan of plastic cheese here. It makes the best toasted sandwiches! And here… https://theveggiemama.com/2012/03/kid-food-breakfast-7/

We are a total bunch of weirdos here. We don’t really do snacks. My kids aren’t grazers, we have three meals and fruit in-between if they are hungry. I always feel like a freak when I have these conversations because I feel like the only parent in the world who isn’t carting around an a ‘la carte tupperware container full of nibblies around with her everywhere she goes.

Hahah a la carte Japanese bento boxes of nibblies are the only bribes my children understand.

We do lots of raw veggie snacks because I’m stricken on the two pieces of fruit a day, plus we aim to be sugar and grain free. So my kids have raw cauliflower florets, mushrooms and Brussels sprouts as well as the more normal carrot sticks. Some of mine even like tinned beans, like kidney.

Holy moley! That’s an impressive list of veggies. I can’t even get Lovely Husband to eat raw cauliflower, mushrooms or brussel sprouts.

Snacks of choice here at the moment are: frozen shredded cheese, rice crackers and pumpkin seeds, sometimes a carrot. He also really likes those gross Japanese rice snack things (the ones that are weirdly sticky and seaweed flavoured). I wish I could get him to eat boiled egg and sweet potato!

hahah it’s taken me years to get her to eat that. We’re still pretty restricted, sadly. Getting there!

Ooo! Will have to investigate the Mayvers Hazelnut spread!
Snacks for my 4- and 2-year-old boys include cheese slices (we like Nimbin cheese), raw cashews or pumpkin seeds, frozen peas, sometimes apple slices, sometimes raw veg like carrot sticks, capsicum and cauliflower (these are less of a sure thing). My 2-year-old loves blueberries and strawberries. Occasionally, I’ll buy multipacks of flavoured rice crackers as a treat. This all sounds good now I’ve written it down, but they’re always trying to suss-out if there’s any chocolate to be had – my mum always has a kinder surprise for them 😉

Sadly, I’ve been feeding my girls easy, sugary stuff for snacks this week that’s easy to whip from the pantry while tending to a newborn. I haven’t had time to get fresh produce from the fruit shop since Problogger. Thankfully Esther tends to get into the fridge and get an apple if she’s hungry and can’t reach the pantry shelves. I need to get organized and when I buy our fruit, pre-cut it. I’ll get there. I need to do the plate idea using ice cube trays or some thing. Thanks for the inspiration. Yet again. x

Pretty sure Bigs ate biscuits for about six months after I had her sister! At least it’s food! when you’ve got more time, you’ll get back into the swing of things.
